Blue and green are not the same Bosch

Bosch sells two distinct lines with the same logo. Blue is Professional — made for trades, sold through tool dealers and pro channels, with model numbers starting G (GSR, GWS, GBH). Green is DIY — sold through consumer retail, lighter duty, with names like PSR, PSB, PST. In the US the distinction is muddier because much of what's sold at retail is blue-line, but green tools do turn up on eBay, often from Europe, and some sellers list them as "Bosch professional" because they're Bosch.

The rule: a G-prefix model number is Professional. A P-prefix is DIY. Batteries don't cross between them either. Pay pro money only for pro tools.

Reading the numbers

In the newer scheme, the number after the voltage is a capability or torque figure (GSR18V-535 is roughly 535 in-lbs). Suffixes: N or B often mean bare tool; -01, -02 and similar denote kit configurations. Bosch is less consistent than DeWalt or Milwaukee here — check the listing photo of the label.

Batteries: CORE18V and AMPShare

All Bosch 18V pro batteries — the original slide packs and the newer CORE18V high-output packs — fit all Bosch 18V pro tools, back to the early 2000s. That backward compatibility is a real advantage used: an old GSR from a decade ago runs fine on a new CORE18V pack.

Bosch also runs AMPShare, an alliance where other brands (Fein, Rothenberger, and others) build tools that take Bosch 18V batteries. If you're in the Bosch ecosystem, that opens up some specialty used tools that would otherwise need their own packs.

Bosch batteries are counterfeited less than DeWalt's or Milwaukee's — smaller market share. Still apply the usual tests: price, weight, label sharpness, seller pattern.

Warranty

Bosch's US warranty is typically one year standard, extendable to three with ProVantage registration by the original buyer. Tied to the original purchase; assume none used.

What to inspect

• SDS chuck on Bulldogs. Insert a bit; it should lock with a click and pull back out with the collar retracted. A chuck that won't hold or won't release is the classic Bulldog repair. Parts are available.
• Glide arm on the GCM12SD. The articulated arm should move smoothly with no side play. Play means worn bushings, which is a real job.
• Collet on routers. A 1617 collet that's been over-tightened can be out of round. Ask if a bit seats and runs true.
• Brushes on corded tools. Bosch corded tools mostly have externally accessible brushes. Cheap to replace, but ask if the tool sparks heavily or hesitates.
• Blue or green. Once more: G-prefix or P-prefix.

Where the value is

Bosch cordless resale is softer than Milwaukee's or DeWalt's — the tools are every bit as good, but the brand has less pull with US buyers — so used Bosch 18V bare tools are often the best price-to-quality in cordless. And the corded classics: a used 11255VSR Bulldog is a hammer you can hand down, and a 1617EVS is the standard-issue router for a reason.
