The three platforms

• M18 — the main line. All M18 batteries fit all M18 tools, including High Output and Forge packs on older tools. FUEL is the brushless premium tier; non-FUEL M18 is brushed and much cheaper used.
• M12 — compact stem-style batteries. Separate platform, not cross-compatible with M18. Milwaukee's M12 lineup is deep enough that many techs run it as a primary system.
• MX FUEL — equipment-class (breakers, core drills, carts). Separate 72V-class batteries. Rarely used; expensive; verify battery health above all else.

Milwaukee is owned by TTI, which also owns RIDGID power tools (the Home Depot orange line), Ryobi, and Hart. Batteries are not shared across those brands. M18 is M18.

Reading the model number

Milwaukee uses a four-digit tool number, a dash, and a two-digit suffix. The suffix is the part that decides what you're actually getting:

Batteries follow a different pattern: 48-11-xxxx. 48-11-1850 is the M18 5Ah, 48-11-1880 the 8Ah High Output, 48-11-2440 the M12 4Ah. Chargers are 48-59-xxxx. Hand tools and accessories use 48-22-xxxx. The 2767-20 is a different thing from the 2767-22 and from the 2767-80, and eBay sellers don't always get the suffix right — check the photo of the label.

Generation matters on FUEL tools. The same four-digit number often carried across generations with small changes; Milwaukee's own site lists "Gen 2/3/4" but the tool label doesn't. Ask the seller for the date code on the tool or the battery-side label.

Warranty

Milwaukee's cordless tools carry a 5-year limited warranty and batteries typically 3 years (some 2), from date of purchase with proof. Hand tools are lifetime. Packout has its own limited coverage. In practice it's tied to the original buyer's receipt, so a used buyer should assume none — though Milwaukee service centers have been known to be reasonable about tools with a clear date code still inside the window. Don't pay for the possibility.

Fake batteries

M18 batteries are the most-counterfeited power tool battery on eBay after DeWalt's, and the fakes have gotten better. Tells:

• Price. A "new" 48-11-1850 for a third of retail is fake. Full stop.
• Weight and feel. Genuine packs are dense. Fakes are lighter and the plastic often has a slightly different texture and sheen.
• Label quality and date code. Genuine labels are sharp with a legible date code and a QR. Fakes blur.
• Fuel gauge behavior. Genuine gauges show a specific light pattern on the button press. Fakes often light all bars regardless of charge.
• Seller. Overseas, dozens of identical "new" listings, no used tools in their history.

Buy used genuine packs with a visible date code from sellers clearing real gear. Expect capacity loss with age; a pack over four years old is a consumable at end of life.

ONE-KEY: a used-buyer wrinkle

Some Milwaukee tools (numbers often ending in higher digits, or with "ONE-KEY" on the label) have Bluetooth tracking. A tool that's been reported lost or stolen through ONE-KEY can be locked out remotely. Before buying a ONE-KEY tool used, ask the seller whether it was registered and whether they'll release it from their account. A tool that shows as locked in the app is a paperweight.

What to inspect

• Model number on the label, with suffix. Not the seller's description.
• Anvil play on impact wrenches; chuck runout on drills. Video.
• Mode selector on FUEL impacts — should click through all modes cleanly.
• Battery terminals on the tool — no corrosion, no bent contacts.
• Trigger — variable speed should ramp smoothly, no dead spots.
• Housing cracks around the battery mount and the gear case — the two places drops show.

Where the value is

Non-FUEL brushed M18 tools are the sleeper — they're good, they run on the same batteries, and they sell for a fraction of FUEL prices because everyone searches for FUEL. Reconditioned -80 tools are also a real discount if the seller has priced them as recons. And M12 is where Milwaukee's used prices are most reasonable relative to new, because the tools are cheaper to begin with.
