The platforms, and what fits what

DeWalt cordless comes in four families, and knowing which one you're buying into is the single most important thing about a used purchase:

• 20V MAX — the main platform since 2011. Every 20V MAX battery fits every 20V MAX tool. Within it, XR marks the brushless, higher-performance tier; PowerStack is the newer pouch-cell battery line. Same slide fit, all interchangeable.
• FlexVolt — 60V (and 120V paired) batteries that automatically drop to 20V when put on a 20V tool. FlexVolt batteries work on 20V MAX tools. 20V batteries do not work on FlexVolt-only tools like the DCS578 saw.
• 12V MAX — separate compact platform. Different battery, not cross-compatible.
• 18V NiCd / XRP — the yellow-and-black legacy line from before 2011, with the post-style battery. Discontinued. The DCA1820 adapter lets 20V batteries run these tools, which is the only reason to buy one used.

The used-buyer implication: a bare 20V MAX tool is almost always the right purchase if you already own the platform. Kits are worth it only if the batteries are genuine, recent, and priced below what the packs would cost alone.

Reading the model number

The suffix is where the money is:

• B = bare tool, no battery or charger. Most used listings.
• D2 / M2 / P2 / T2 / X2 = kit with two batteries. The letter is capacity: D ≈ 2Ah, M ≈ 4Ah, P ≈ 5Ah, T ≈ 6Ah FlexVolt, X ≈ 9Ah FlexVolt. The digit is how many packs.
• C1 / E1 = kit with one smaller battery.
• R at the end = factory reconditioned. Not necessarily bad, but it should be priced as such.

So DCF887M2 is an impact driver with two 4Ah batteries; DCF887B is the same tool bare. Searching eBay by full model number with the suffix gets you exactly the configuration you want.

Warranty reality

DeWalt's standard coverage is a 3-year limited warranty, 1 year of free service, and a 90-day satisfaction guarantee. It's tied to the original purchase and proof of it — effectively not transferable. For a used buyer, assume no warranty. Factor that into what you pay, and prefer sellers who'll take a return.

Fake batteries — the DeWalt-specific problem

Counterfeit DeWalt batteries are everywhere on eBay, mostly DCB205 and DCB206 lookalikes, and they are genuinely dangerous — poor cells, no thermal protection, and a fire risk on the charger. Tells:

• Price. A "new" DCB205 at half the retail price is fake. Genuine packs don't discount that far.
• Weight. Genuine 5Ah packs are heavy. Fakes with undersized cells are noticeably lighter.
• Label and date code. Genuine packs have a crisp printed label with a date code. Fakes have blurry printing, misaligned text, or no date.
• Seller pattern. Dozens of identical "new" batteries from an overseas seller is the tell.
• Fuel gauge. On genuine XR packs the button and LEDs feel solid. Fake gauges are often loose or dim.

The safe move is to buy genuine used packs with a visible date code from a seller who is clearly clearing out real gear, and to expect them to be at 70–85% of original capacity depending on age.

What to inspect on the tools

• Chuck runout on drills — ask for a video with a bit installed, spinning.
• Anvil play on impact wrenches — grab the square drive and wiggle. A little is normal; a lot means a worn anvil.
• Brushed vs brushless. XR is brushless. Non-XR brushed motors are fine but should be much cheaper.
• Battery contacts on the tool — corroded or bent terminals are a repair.
• Trigger and forward/reverse switch — the most common electrical failure. Ask if there's any hesitation.
• Serial and origin. Some DeWalt is "Made in USA with global materials," some is Mexico or Brazil or China. Quality is consistent across them; origin mostly matters for people who care about the stamp.

Where the value is

Bare XR tools from sellers who list the model number in full. The DCF887, DCD791/796, and DCS570 are so common used that prices are keen, and they're all excellent. Batteries are the opposite — the value in batteries is buying genuine used packs cheaply and accepting reduced capacity, never buying "new" packs cheaply.
